My godfather, John Regan, died this morning of cancer at the age of 67. He left behind two children, both in their early 20s, and a wife who is suffering from breast cancer. His death is heart-breaking and unfair. I’m lost and in shock and furious.
And I can’t help thinking, the timing is uncanny.
Tonight in [...]

Published by February 22nd, 2010 Cassandra Lewis in Romeo & Juliet and Uncategorized. 0 CommentsAll this time I thought Lady Capulet had few lines because it remarked on her position in the house/play; that Shakespeare was revealing something about her.
But tonight, Gregg explained that because only men could act in those times, the older female characters were more of a challenge; it was much more believable to have a [...]
“I pray thee, hold thy peace.”
Published by February 19th, 2010 Cassandra Lewis in Romeo & Juliet. 0 CommentsWow. This might be a new all-time low: 2 posts within five minutes of one another.
But this was something on my mind last night that I wanted to write about – but life (& school) caught up with me & prevented it.
Last night’s rehearsal was an interesting (albeit admittedly tedious) mixture of blocking & character [...]
W(ail)bone stays.
Published by February 19th, 2010 Cassandra Lewis in Acting, Romeo & Juliet and costumes. 0 CommentsSo obviously, going into this production I knew it was going to call for period costumes – i.e., corsets – which still makes me reel with joy. I still get excited to see the designs, get laced up, & slip on those beautiful dresses. It’s truly fascinating to live in these historically accurate pieces, getting [...]
Of daggers & daughters & decadence.
Published by February 16th, 2010 Cassandra Lewis in Romeo & Juliet. 0 CommentsPaul (Mercutio) & I were talking tonight about this & that, & somehow we came upon the topic of death/suicide. During this, I brought up one of Juliet’s lines, the line implying that suicide is the only power one has over one’s life.
Paul then asked me, “Does Lady Capulet ever consider killing herself? Why hasn’t [...]
The pearl & the pig.
Published by February 15th, 2010 Cassandra Lewis in Romeo & Juliet and rehearsal. 0 CommentsSome breakthroughs I’ve had during blocking:
Lady Capulet truly believes she’s giving Juliet a gift by wedding her to Paris.
All this time I’ve been wondering why Lady Capulet has been goading her daughter into the very life she herself hates; she was married far too early to a man she didn’t (& doesn’t) love, had [...]
Being Romeo’s Mom…
Published by February 14th, 2010 bethanyfarrell in Acting and Romeo & Juliet. 0 CommentsHello! I’m Bethany Farrell and I am playing Romeo’s mom, Lady Montague, in this production. (I also am working on the sets as a scene shop assistant, but that is a different blog post)
Lady Montague is a mother and a wife. She loves her son deeply and is very confused by the sequence of events [...]
Foreshadowing the throwdown
Published by February 13th, 2010 Katie B. OConnor in Acting, Direction, Romeo & Juliet and rehearsal. Click on post title to commentYesterday Gregg and I were working on my first monologue in the play. It occurs when Lady Capulet and Juliet are discussing the possibility of Juliet getting married soon. In the monologue the Nurse reminisces about weaning Juliet, whilst remembering her daughter, Susan, who died as a young child. Her specific line is , “Well [...]
Lady Capulet quandaries.
Published by January 31st, 2010 Cassandra Lewis in Acting and Romeo & Juliet. 0 CommentsI suppose I should start this new round of blogging with an introduction.
I’m Cassandra Lewis, a junior at UMW, & I’ll be playing Lady Capulet.
(Dear readers, please bear with me as this post is inevitably going to be long-winded & circular.)
Before auditioning for “Romeo & Juliet,” I was told by quite a few people that [...]
